but costly. 24 aircraft are lost, mostly to enemy fighters.
15 B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Saint Omer and Longuenesse
airfield.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During
25-26
July 1943, Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) medium
bombers attack Milazzo, Adrano, and Paterno. Throughout day
light bombers hit Regalbuto at intervals, and fighter-bombers
harass shipping, rail, and road movements. Northwest African
Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb
Marina di Paola marshalling yard.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb Milazzo, Paterno, and Adrano.
P-40 fighters strafe and bomb Catania and shipping at Riposto
harbour.
Fourteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, escorted by 12 fighters, bomb
Hankow airfield. An estimated 30-50 fighters intercept the
force. The medium bombers and fighters claim 14 aeroplanes
shot down and 17 probably destroyed. 1 P-40 is lost.
Fifth Air Force. More than 40 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Salamaua, Malolo
Mission, Komiatum, Komiatum Ridge, and Lae airfield.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, P-38 Lightning fighters, P-40
fighters, and Navy aircraft hit bivouac area and runway at
Kahili. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, P-40 fighters, and
United States Navy (USN) fighters over South Kolombangara
hit East shore of Webster Cove and bivouac area and buildings
on Simbo Island.
Seventh Air Force. Last mission against Wake from Midway is
flown. 8 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb targets including
oil storage area. 20 fighters (including an aircraft
identified as a possible
Fw
190) intercept the formation. Heavy bombers claim 11 of
the fighters shot down.
Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
bombers and 5 fighters fly 5 armed reconnaissance missions
to Kiska. 32 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 38 P-40 fighters,
and 24 P-38 Lightning fighters fly 13 attack raids, bombing
and scoring hits on numerous Kiska and Little Kiska targets,
including North Head, Main Camp, runway, Gertrude Cove, antiaircraft
batteries, and on suspected submarine in Kiska harbour. A
submarine is sighted near Rat Island. Antiaircraft fire claims
1 P-40 (pilot rescued), and damages 3 others. 1 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers and 15 P-38 Lightning fighters fly 2 air cover
missions to Kiska for the Navy. Over 104 tons of bombs are
dropped on Kiska this day, highest one day bomb load so far
dropped by the Eleventh.
