Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 130 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack targets in West Germany. Malfunction of blind bombing equipment results in no attacks on primary target of Gelsenkirchen.

Ninth Air Force. Over 100 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers dispatched to attack airfields in France abort mission when bad weather prevents rendezvous with fighters escorts.

Twelfth Air Force. XII A Support Command A-36 Apache dive bomber and P-40 fighters bomb bridge East of Cassino and bridge and village of Pontecorvo, and, along with Desert Air Force (DAF) fighter-bombers, hit strong points around village of Barrea while supporting ground forces. Fighters (mostly Desert Air Force (DAF)) also strafe trucks and trains around Rieti and Metkovic.

Fifteenth Air Force. Weather causes recall of all aircraft dispatched.

Fourteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on shipping sweeps in South China Sea strafe 2 vessels off Hong Kong, score damaging hits on 2 vessels at Kiungshan, damage a freighter off Tsao Tao Island, and leave a gunboat and freighter sinking East of Swatow. Warehouses and wharves at Swatow also are hit.

Fifth Air Force. Nearly 30 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb positions in Sattelberg area. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Finschhafen area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Kentengi Anchorage.

Thirteenth Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Matchin Bay and Ballale Island airfield areas.

Seventh Air Force. 31 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Ellice Islands bases hit Tarawa and Makin.
