Ninth Air Force 228 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium
bombers dispatched to bomb 4 airfields in France are recalled
before attacking because of unfavourable weather. General
Quesada becomes Commanding General IX Fighter Command.
Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Command B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers bomb marshalling yard at Skoplje. P-38 Lightning fighters
follow with strafing mission, damaging or destroying several
locomotives and vehicles. XII A Support Command A-36 Apache dive bomber hit
Venafro railroad yards, and other fighter-bombers hit gun
positions, troops, and railway stations in or near Boiano,
Petacciato, and Vairano. Fighters strafe airfields around
Rome and also hit Viterbo, Grosseto, and seaplane base at
Bracciano, and attack trains on Rome Orte and Rome Naples
lines. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) light
bombers bomb road and railway near Cassino, town of Carpinone,
road junction at Castiglione della Valle, and roads, bridges,
and motor transport near Minturno and Chieti.
Fifth Air Force. Nearly 80 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers and fighters sent against Rabaul are forced
to abort by bad weather. However, more than 50 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers slip beneath low clouds and pound town, airfields,
and shipping from treetop and mast height level. The medium
bombers sink 2 vessels and claim more than 70 planes destroyed
on the ground and in the air. 13 of the heavy bombers bomb
Cape Hoskins; 7 others bomb Cape Gloucester and hit Sio. B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe Bogadjim road.
Thirteenth Air Force. 28 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 40 plus Navy dive bombers,
with cover of more than 50 fighters, hit Ballale Island Airfield.
14 P-39 fighters join 20 Navy aircraft in strike on Kakasa
village and tent area on Choiseul.
Eleventh Air Force. The 406th Bomber Squadron departs for
the Zone of Interior.
