It was announced that Field Marshal Sir A. O. Wavell to be
Viceroy of India from October. In succession to Lord Linlithgow,
General Sir C. J. E. Auchinleck to succeed Field Marshal Sir
A. O. Wavell as Commander-In-Chief India, East Asia Command
to be set up.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers strike Messina
ferry slip and railroad yards while P-38 Lightning fighters
bomb Milo airfield. B-26 Marauder medium bombers and B-25
Mitchell medium bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort,
hit docks and shipping at Olbia and shipping at Golfo Aranci.
Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) and Northwest
African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) aeroplanes maintain patrol
and reconnaissance flights. Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF)
aircraft claim over 40 aircraft destroyed.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe power launches off
Cape Gloucester and Finschhafen, sinking 1 and damaging 2
near the Cape. A single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers
bombs Unea Island while an A-20 Havoc light bombers on armed
reconnaissance during 18-
19
June 1943 bombs and strafes Salamaua and nearby coastal areas.

B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kahili airfield while B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit Ballale Island and strafe barges
in Wilson Strait.
