Events On This Day

United States Army Air Forces in United Kingdom (USAAFUK). Headquarters United States Army Air Forces in United Kingdom (USAAFUK) is activated to exercise supervision over and provide coordination between Eighth and Ninth Air Forces in United Kingdom. General Eaker is appointed Commanding General in addition to his duties as Commanding General Eighth Air Force.

Eighth Air Force. A much needed P-38 Lightning fighters group (55th Fighter) becomes operational in United Kingdom.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers of XII Bomber Command hit airfields at Salonika and Megalo Mikra. XII A Support Command and other elements of Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) hit roads, railroads, bridges, junctions, railway facilities, town areas, and motor transport at or near Piedimonte, Vairano, Termoli, Petacciato, Sparanise, and Civitanova, and hit gun positions and command in general battle area North of Volturno River.

Fifth Air Force. More than 50 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters intercept around 100 aircraft attacking Allied shipping in Oro Bay. The United States fighters claim more than 40 shot down. 4 other P-40 fighters, encountering 20 aeroplanes East of Finschhafen, claim 5 destroyed. More than 70 medium bombers hit positions and villages from Sio to Saidor. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Boela.

Thirteenth Air Force. 21 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 12 P-38 Lightning fighters, and 17 Navy F4U Corsair fighter pound Kahili airfield supply and personnel area. 6 Zeros are claimed shot down. During the late evening B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb airfields at Buka Island.
