The British Royal Air Force (RAF) de Havilland Mosquito bombers
attacked railway workshops at Tours, heavy night raids on
Cologne, Milan and Spezia carried out by the British Royal
Air Force (RAF) bombers.
North Africa. In South Tunisia the Wehrmacht launched attack
from Faid and Sened on United States of America positions
round Gafsa and Sbeitla.
Russian Front. Russians announced capture of Rostov and Voroshilovgrad
from the Wehrmacht ground forces.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers on shipping strike return with bombs
when no vessels are sighted. Other medium bombers and heavy
bomber operations are cancelled by bad weather. Fighters strafe
vehicles and gun emplacements in El Guettar-Sened-Maknassy
areas, and hit tanks and trucks near Sidi Saad. A-20 Havoc
light bombers bomb tanks in Faid Pass, trucks near Maknassy
and South West of Faid, town of Maknassy, and railroad yards
at Station de Sened. Enemy ground forces (armoured and infantry)
begin drive, supported by artillery and dive bombers, against
Allied forces East of Sidi bou Zid.
Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium
bombers unsuccessfully attack bridge at Myitnge. 14 fighter-bombers
hit town area of Maingkwan and barracks to the Southwest.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
administer a thorough pounding to the Rabaul area, and also
bomb Kokopo area, Watom Island, vessels off Kokopo and off
Cape Nelson. Individual B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack
Madang area and hit sawmill at Ubili. B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers bomb airfields at Lae.
Thirteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with light fighters protection,
again attack Buin. Japanese fighters again put up rugged opposition
and shoot down 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. As a result
of the loss of 5 heavy bombers in 15 sorties in 2 days, all
daylight bombing missions in North Solomons are halted till
adequate fighters protection can be furnished. P-39 fighters
and Navy aircraft bomb and strafe Munda airfield and hit antiaircraft
position and other targets at Munda Point. P-38 Lightning
fighters and Navy aircraft report hits on small vessel near
Kahili and claim 11 shot down. 8 more Allied aeroplanes are
lost.
Eleventh Air Force. Weather reconnaissance aeroplane turns
back due to weather, as does morning patrol of 1 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters flying over Amchitka.
Other missions from Adak are also called off. 7 enemy float-type
planes bomb and strafe Constantine Harbour area without effect.
