Eighth Air Force. 1st, 2d, and 3d Bomber Divisions are activated
in United Kingdom. They are formed from complements of VIII
Bomber Commands 4 bomber wings. Each bomb division is organised
into combat bomber wings. Commanding Officers of the Bomber
Divisions are General Williams (1st), General Hodges (2d),
and Colonel Curtis E LeMay (3d).
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers of XII Bomber Command bomb roads
in Torre del Greco area highway at Sala Consilina, and road
junction, railway and bridge at Atena Lucana. B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers attack viaduct, rail and road junctions, and
rail lines in Pompeii-Castellammare di Stabia Torre Annuziata
areas. XII A Support Command A-36 Apache dive bomber destroy
25 to 30 vehicles near Potenza, and fighters maintain convoy
patrol. United States and The British Royal Air Force (RAF)
light bombers and medium bombers of Northwest African Tactical
Bomber Force (NATBF) hit town areas, road junctions, and vehicles
in Auletta-Pompeii-Sala Consilina-San Severino Rota areas.
Over 80 troop transports drop contingents of 82d Airborne
Division South of Sele River to strengthen bridgehead in face
of enemy counter-attacks which threaten United States Fifth
Army beachhead in Salerno area.
Ninth Air Force. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers,
under IX Bomber Command, hit Potenza. Colonel Frederick M
Byerly replaces Colonel Charles D McAllister as commander
of IX Fighter Command.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers escorted by P-38 Lightning fighters,
bomb airfields and ammunition dumps in Wewak area. B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers hit Lae.
Eleventh Air Force. General Johnson succeeds General Butler
as Commanding General of the Eleventh.

was used against the light cruiser HMS Uganda, and she was
severely damaged.
