B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers, out of 710 dispatched, bomb port areas of Bremen
and Hamburg and Kriegsmarine U-boat yards at Kiel. This is
first Eighth Air Force mission in which more than 600 heavy
bombers attack targets. P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers escorting
the heavy bombers reach the limit of their escort range for
the first time.
Ninth Air Force. Nearly 200 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
medium bombers attack Schiphol airfield. IX Fighter Command
P-61 Black Widow, night fighter Black Widow, night fighter,
working with VIII Fighter Command P-38 Lightning fighters,
fly longest escort mission to date, escorting heavy bombers
to and from Kiel.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb oil depot, harbour, warehouses,
and railway yard at Sibenik and Split. P-40 and A-36 Apache dive bomber fighter-bombers
attack defended points in Miglionico area, quays, roads, railway
yard, and gun emplacements at Terracina; and bridges at Pontecorvo
and West of Isolella. Town areas and bridges at and near Atina
and Acquafondata are also hit.
Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
Operations are restricted to weather reconnaissance.
Tenth Air Force. 20 Japanese bombers, escorted by 25 fighters,
hit Dinjan airfield before United States interceptors make
contact. However, little damage is done and the United States
fighters catch the attackers shortly afterward. 12 Japanese
bombers and 5 fighters are claimed knocked down.
Fourteenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with fighters escort, bomb Li-Chou
and Kungan. 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Wuchang airfield.
16 P-40 fighters on armed reconnaissance strafe targets from
Changte to Linli to Li-Chou.
Fifth Air Force. More than 100 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers and several P-40 fighters bomb Gasmata. A-20 Havoc
light bombers hit villages along Bogadjim Road. A small flight
of P-39 fighters strafe barges along Huon Peninsula.
Thirteenth Air Force. 17 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Porton, and their fighters
escorts strafe Tenekow bivouac areas during return flight.
24 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Bonis. 6 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers carry out low-level strikes against concentrations
on Numa Numa.
Seventh Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, staging through Baker Island
from Canton Island, bomb Wotje.
