Events On This Day

Russian Front. Krasnodar in the Kuban, Shakhty, North of Rostov, and Krasnoarmeisk and Voroshilovsk in the Ukraine was captured the Wehrmacht ground forces by Soviet troops.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bomber and medium bombers missions are cancelled because of weather. A-20 Havoc light bombers attack gun installations West of Station de Sened. Fighters escort A-20 Havoc light bombers and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft, and fly routine patrols.

Tenth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Myitnge bridge area but fail to damage bridge itself. This strike marks first use of 2,000 lb blockbusters in the China-Burma-India (CBI). 12 other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Mahlwagon marshalling yard and railway station at Rangoon. 12 P-40 fighters hit barracks near Lonkin.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, operating individually, attack sawmill at Ubili, runway at Cape Gloucester, and harbour and airfield at Rabaul, and score possible hit on 6,000 ton vessel in Solomon Sea between New Britain and Bougainville.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters, along with Navy aircraft, attack Munda area, hitting antiaircraft at Rapa and setting fires at Kokengolo. B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-39 fighters follow with strike on the Munda airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. Weather reconnaissance and attack missions on Kiska and a fighters patrol over Amchitka are broken off due to weather.
