Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Command United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Benevento
marshalling yard and bridge and highway junction nearby. B-25
Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit
highways and junctions at Castelnuovo, Ariano, Mignano, and
Isernia. P-40 fighters fly uneventful sweep over South Sardinia.
United States and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) aeroplanes
of Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) continue to
provide beachhead cover in Salerno area, hit road command
throughout the day, and attack road and rail bridges, junctions,
airfield, and town areas at Sapri, Corleto, Perticara, Auletta,
and Gioia del Colle.
Fourteenth Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 11 P-40 fighters attack Hankow
docks and Wuchang cotton mills. 3 P-38 Lightning fighters
bomb ammunition and fuel depots at Tayeh and strafe warehouses
and barracks at Yangsin.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Makassar. Australian forces cross
Francisco River to Salamaua airfield as Japanese forces begin
to evacuate Salamaua and withdraw toward Lae.
Thirteenth Air Force. 18 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound area West of Vila airfield
and West of Disappointment Cove. The airfield is hit again
in the evening by 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. 25 B-24
Liberator heavy bombers, with fighters escort, bomb Kahili
airfield. Heavy bombers and fighters claim 7 aircraft shot
down. P-40 fighters and P-39 fighters support Navy dive bombers
in striking gun positions at Hamberi.
Eleventh Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 8 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
attack Paramushiru for the third and last time this year.
6 heavy bombers bomb Kashiwabara staging area. Shipping is
bombed and strafed in Kashiwabara harbour and Paramushiru
Straits. 1 freighter and 1 large transport is sunk while 1
transport and 2 cargo ships are damaged. 2 other cargo vessels
sustain possible hits. Targets hit on land include 2 buildings
and a antiaircraft battery on Shimushu. Of 40 fighters giving
battle, 13 are shot down and 3 more are probables. 2 heavy
bombers force land in USSR, one with mechanical defect, the
other after being hit. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers is downed
by antiaircraft fire. Losses are 7 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
and 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers in this most disastrous
day for the Eleventh. It will be another 5 months before it
is able to strike at the Kurils again.

was used during the invasion of Salerno and the light cruiser
Savannah was badly damaged also the Philadelphia suffered
a near miss but damage was still caused.
