Events On This Day

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces have claimed to have capture Sevastopol against extremely fierce opposition.

In Africa. Afrika Korps, tanks and infantry attacked our positions at Ei Alamein.

In China. American Army Air ,Force raided Hankow aerodrome.

In Australasia. Allied bombers attacked airfield at Kendari, Celebes, making 1,700 mile flight.

Eighth Air Force. The first B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers (assigned to 97th Bomber Group) of the BOLERO movement via North Atlantic route lands at Prestwick.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb harbour at Tobruk during 1-2 July 1942.

Tenth Air Force. First combat mission of CATF takes place before the formal activation on 4 July 1942 of the unit. 4 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers from Hengyang, escorted by P-40 fighters, bomb docks at Hankow. Bad weather handicaps the bombardiers, and the effects of the raid are inconsequential.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Salamaua. Other medium bombers and heavy bomber strikes abort due to bad weather.

Eleventh Air Force. The XI Provisional Bomber Command comprising the 28th Comp Group and its assigned squadrons is activated. Colonel William O Eareckson in command . A B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers flies weather reconnaissance over Kiska and lands early due to weather.
