An agreement between the United States of America and United
Kingdom is announced to the effect that 50 United States destroyers
needed for escort work will be transferred to United Kingdom.
In return, America gains 99-year leases on British bases in
the North Atlantic, West Indies and Bermuda.
The British Admiralty announced that the sloop HMS Penzance
had been sunk by U-boat.
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made night attacks
on dynamite works at Schlebusch and Bayer explosive works
near Cologne oil installations at Ludwigshafen and Frankfurt
Bosch factory at Stuttgart, Dortmund Ems canal, French port
of Lorient, gun emptacements at Cap Gris Nez.
Coastal Command aircraft bombed supply ships oil Dutch coast,
oil tanks at Flushing, and Ostend harbour.
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombed important railway
junction and electric power station at Genoa.
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) renewed attacks on Assab,
Eritrea.
Repeated attempts by big Luftwaffe formations to bomb Kent
and Thames estuary aerodromes, and to reach London, were beaten
off by fighters and antiaircraft gunners. Series of dramatic
air battles took place one being over a Southeast coast town.
During night enemy activity was wide spread but on smaller
scale. Attacks mainly directed against Bristol Channel and
South Wales area.
Fifty-five Germans raiders destroyed. Eighteen British fighters
lost, but pilots of eight safe.
