First Flotilla of 50 transferred American destroyers arrived
in British waters.
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) again raided Berlin and
electric power stations and antiaircraft guns positions were
bombed. Elsewhere in North Germany targets included railway
centres and aerodromes. Fires and explosions caused at Wilhelmshaven.
Munitions works at Hanau, near Frankfurt, severely damaged.
Channel ports and enemy base at Lorient again attacked.
South African Air Force (SAAF) successfully raided Birikau,
Italian Somaliland, for third time.
During morning Luftwaffe aircraft, chiefly
Messerschmitt
Me 109 crossed Southeast coast and a few reached East
London, Bombs fell but damage was slight. Bombs also dropped
on South coast town. Luftwaffe force approached Portsmouth
area, but were driven off.
Night attacks were made on London, Southeast England, Merseyside
and East Midlands. Both high explosive bombs and incendiaries
were dropped. Shops in a South London district extensively
damaged. Wardens post hit and nine perished. Isolation hospital
and, other buildings. damaged in South West suburb. Six Luftwaffe
aircraft destroyed. Britain lost seven fighters.
