British submarine sunk German collier Edmund Hugo Stinnes IVoff north coast of Denmark, after ensuring crew safety.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) carried out reconnaissance flights over north-west Germany during the night of 23 March 1940 and 24 March 1940. One machine failed to return.

The British Admiralty announced that the trawler HMS Loch Assater had been sunk by a mine. Entire crew was rescued.

Helsinki reported that the red army had taken over Hango, which was formally handed over at midnight on 22 March 1940

It was announced that Norwegian government lodged protests in Berlin on 18 March 1940, and 19 March 1940 against the German air attacks Norwegian steamers Lysaker and Bott.
