The British Royal Air Force (RAF) carried out daylight raids
on Calais, Ostend; Dunkirk and Veere. Couvoys of barges attacked,
off Zeebrugge and Ostend. Haamstede aerodrome also bombed,
Adverse weather prevented night raids, as accurate bombing
would have been impossible.
Advance guard of Italian invaders of Egypt reached Sidi Barrani,
60 miles from Libyan frontier, although harassed by the British
Royal Air Force (RAF) Asmara aerodrome, Eritrea, successfully
attacked.
Long-range guns were in action in morning on both sides of
Channel. Large formations of Luftwaffe aircraft crossed Southeast
coast about 8 a.m. and attempted to penetrate inland, but.were
driven off. Later small numbers crossed the coast and a few
bombs fell at several points.
Intense antiaircraft barrage put up at night when Luftwaffe
raiders approached London in successive relays of small groups
Bombs fell in many parts and surrounding suburbs. Many famous
West End streets and squares damaged. Another hospital hit.
Fires were caused but`. were quickly under control. In Home
Counties most bombs fell in rural areas., Towns in Midlands
and North West suffered damage and casualties. Six Luftwaffe
bombers destroyed during the night four by antiaircraft guns.
Germany lost 7 aircraft, Britain one.
