Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced that the destroyer Escort had been lost in the Western Mediterranean.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked by night plane factory at Bremen, oil retineriesat Bremen and Hamburg, goods yards at Harnm and Soest, and other military objectives. Other aircraft bombed aerodromes in Holland and Germany.

Coastal Command aircraft attacked oil storage depot at Ghent.

Gibraltar raided three times. Bomber driven off by antiaircraft guns.

British aircraft raided Italian posts in Libya and Eritrea.

Shipping in Tobruk harbour again attacked. Garrison in British Moyale, Kenya frontier, withdrew after holding out for five days.

Air battle over Straits of Dover, when about 40 Junkers dive bombers and escorting Messerschmitts attacked a convoy. Five bombers and two. fighters destroyed by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters and antiaircraft guns.

Frenchmen in London, led by general de Gaulle, celebrated Le Quatorze Juillet.
