HMS Transylvania was a British liner, and in September 1939,
the liner was converted into an armed merchant cruiser, pennant
F56. and on 10 August 1940, off Malin Head, Ireland she was
torpedoed by the
U-56.
HMS Transylvania was being towed afterward but sank before
reaching land. 36 lives were lost.
The submarine HMS Odin considerably overdue and presumed lost.
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) made daylight attacks on
enemy aerodromes in Holland and France, including Schiphol,
Querqueville, Flushing, Caen, Dinard and Guernsey. Night objectives
included Hamburg docks, Wilhelmshaven, oil tanks at Frankfurt
and Homburg, and supplies at Hamm and Soest.
ltalian advance in Somaliland continued. French airmen reported
to be taking part in British Royal Air Force (RAF) operations
in Africa. Italian aircraft raided Aden.
Sporadic German raids reported in England and Wales. Twelve
high explosive bombs dropped near town in Southeast
Syria closed frontier to British and other combatant subjects
of military age.
