Events On This Day

French communiques announce further advances into German territory, where reinforcements had been brought up to meet them.

Fierce fighting on two main fronts in Poland. The Germans claimed to have reached Pultusk 30 miles north of Warsaw.

Attempts were made to torpedo the Dutch steamship Batavia which was escorted by destroyers.

Sir Neville Henderson and his embassy staff were returned to England.

The British continued attacks on German submarines.

Iraq severed relations with Germany.

Yugoslavia ordered a full and complete mobilisation of her forces

The Panama Canal came under military control.

The garrison at Westerplatte near Danzig, surrendered after a long and gallant resistance.

British freighter Olivegrove was torpedoed some 200 miles north-west of the Spanish coast.

Eire government called up first line volunteers the Army reserve had already been mobilised.
