Events On This Day

Independence Day celebrated by few still in Helsinki.

President Roosevelt sent messages of sympathy to President Kallio.

Finns retreated slowly to mainline of defence in Karelian Isthmus.

Elsewhere Russian troops made little progress.

Fifty aeroplanes have arrived in Finland from Italy.

Great Britain and other countries have also dispatched aeroplanes and armaments.

The British air ministry announced Luftwaffe air activity during the preceding night of the east coast. I Owing to weather conditions, fighter aircraft were unable to make contact. The wreckage of a Heinkel He 111 aeroplane, and the body of a German airmen were recovered on the East Anglian coast. Luftwaffe aircraft sighted over the Orkneys

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft carried out a successful flight over North Germany.

Berlin issued a letter to the foreign press, in which neutral countries, especially Holland were attacked for lack of resistance to British blockade. Holland, later made a semi-official protest against German criticism.

The German ship Ussukuma was captured by a British warship in the South Atlantic.

The Greek steamer Paralos was sunk in the Thames estuary.

The Danish steamer Ove Toft was mined in the North sea.
