Events On This Day

The Polish resistance continued in Warsaw andModlin, with appalling loss of life and destruction to buildings.

French artillery began the first bombardments of the Rhine fortifications. There were air battles in Saar region

Zeppelin base at Friedrichshafen, near the Swiss frontier, was stated to have been bombed by French aircraft.

It was reported that further reconnaissance flights had taken place over Western Germany on 24 September 1939 and during the course of the night propaganda leaflets were dropped.

Several skirmishes between the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Luftwaffe took place.

Sabotage was stated to be the cause of explosions which occurred in many German factories.

President Moscicki and Marshall Smigly-Rydz, interned in Romania.

The Swedish steamer Silesia, torpedoed off Stavanger.

All German women between the ages of 17 and 25, to be conscripted for obligatory national labour service.

Turkish Foreign Minister, M Saradjoglu, arrived in Moscow.
