Events On This Day

German attack on Warsaw checked attacking troops retired to the outskirts. Polish broadcasts continued from the capital, in spite of Wehrmacht, interference on the same wavelength.

In the South of Poland, the German advance, aimed at Lwow was held up.

French attacks made substantial progress on a 12 mile front east of the Saar. There were bayonet charges by the French in the sector between Merzig , 22 miles south of Trier and the Moselle, and a raids on troop concentrations behind the Siegfried line.

It was reported that British Royal Air Force (RAF) planes carried out a raid early on 9 September 1939 on the island of Sylt, site of a big German airbase of the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein.

The Polish government moved their headquarters to Brzsec-Litewski (Brest-Litovsk) 115 miles east of Warsaw.

The King opened a fund of the British Red Cross and order of St John with a gift of £5,000.

The British government issued through the Ministry of information, a declaration of policy, in which it was stated that Britain would make peace only with a German government could be trusted, and therefore no peace was possible with Adolf Hitler.

A message to India from King Emperor was read by the Viceroy to the central legislator in Simla.
