Alexander Löhr was born on 20 May 1885 in Turnu-Severin,
Romania and was an Österreichische Luftstreitkräfte
(Austrian Air Force) commandant during the 1930s and, after
the Anschluss of Germany and Austria, Alexander Löhr
became commandant Luftwaffe (German Air Force). Alexander
Löhr served in the Luftwaffe during World War II. Alexander
Löhr served as Platoon Hauptmann of a Pioneer battalion
in the 85th Infantry Regiment of the Austro-Hungarian army
in the First World War.
During 1921 Alexander Löhr had attained the rank of Oberstleutnant.
During 1921 and 1934 Alexander Löhr held numerous staff
positions in the military, including Director of the Air Force
in the Federal Armies Ministry. After 1934, Alexander Löhr
was made commandant of the small Österreichische Luftstreitkräfte
(Austrian Air Force), a position which he held until the Anschluss
in 1938.
On 15 March 1938, Alexander Löhr was transferred to the
Luftwaffe (German Air Force) where he became commandant of
the German Air Force in Austria. From then Alexander Löhr
had been promoted to Generalleutnant. Alexander Löhr
was commandant of Luftflotte 4 in the East from May 1939 until
June 1942. Luftflotte 4 implemented the bombing of Warsaw,
capital of Poland in September 1939 and of Belgrade, capital
of Yugoslavia in April 1941. Alexander Löhr was promoted
to Generaloberst effective 3 May 1941. Alexander Löhr
commanded the 12. Armee from 12 July 1942 to December 1942.
On 1 January to 23 August 1943, Alexander Löhr was commandant
of the Southeast Alexander Löhr was also the commandant
of Heeresgruppe E (Army Group E) from 1 January up to the
end of the Second World War. As commandant of Heeresgruppe
E (Army Group E), Alexander Löhr supervised the successful
Dodecanese Campaign. Alexander Löhr surrendered on 9
May 1945 to Slovenian Partisans at Topolica, Slovenia.
Alexander Löhr was incarcerated by the Yugoslavs from
15 May 1945 to 26 February 1947. Alexander Löhr was tried
for war crimes and found guilty, and executed on 26 February
1947. Specifically, Alexander Löhr was put to death by
firing squad in Belgrade, capital of Yugoslavia, for his role
as the commandant of the Luftflotte 4 units involved in the
Bombing of Belgrade capital of Yugoslavia in 1941.
