Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out a large scale night-time attack on Cologne and surrounding areas.

Russian Front. Fierce fighting again broke out in workers settlement of Stalingrad as the Wehrmacht ground forces tried to advance but were beaten of by the Russian defence forces.

In the Mediterranean. Fourteen enemy aircraft destroyed over Malta.

In Australasia. Japanese surface transports landing large reinforcements on Guadalcanal were attacked by United States of America aircraft.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers and P-40 fighters pound forces South of Templeton's Crossing and at Popondetta. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Salamaua and hit targets in Owen Stanley Range and in area around bridge at Wairopi. A single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attacks shipping near Treasury Island.

South Pacific (SOPAC). Aviation fuel arrives at Henderson Field from Espiritu Santo by aircraft and ship.

Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb and 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies photo reconnaissance over Kiska and Attu. The B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit a large cargo ship in Gertrude Cove, starting fire, and hit buildings on Attu. Antiaircraft claims 1 B-26 Marauder medium bombers.

Zone of Interior. Army Air Forces Antisubmarine Command is activated to take over antisubmarine operations of I Bomber Command, which is inactivated.
